About Aaron Hnatiw
Pronunciation: Aaron Hnatiw — “A-run NA-too.”
Aaron Hnatiw is a Canadian pianist and composer whose music combines expressive piano melodies with rich, evolving layers of electronic sound.
Drawing from contemporary classical and ambient electronic music, his compositions explore the relationship between melody, harmony, atmosphere, and imagination. His pieces often begin with slowly shifting electronic textures, gradually building into fuller harmonies and expressive piano melodies. Sometimes sparse and delicate, sometimes expansive and powerful, the music develops without a predetermined destination, leaving room for each listener to discover their own story or journey within it.
At the heart of his musical practice is a dedication to live composition.
Classically trained in piano from the age of five, Aaron eventually found himself more interested in creating music than performing it from sheet music. When he returned to the piano as a young adult, he rediscovered his love of playing through the freedom of following his ear, discovering melodies and harmonies as he played. That approach became the foundation of the music he creates today.
His later introduction to synthesizers opened up an entirely new world of musical possibilities. What began with piano expanded into sound design, layered textures, and evolving electronic atmospheres. The piano remains at the heart of his music, carrying the melody, while synthesizers create the setting and sonic environment in which each piece unfolds.
For Aaron, composing is an act of listening, responding, and discovery. Rather than beginning with a written composition or predetermined destination, he allows the music to develop naturally, following wherever it leads.
His live performance series, Dreaming, brings this approach to the stage. Every piece is composed in real time, offering an experience that is unique to the place and moment in which it is created. Listeners are invited to close their eyes, follow the music, and discover their own meaning within it — with every journey being entirely their own.
